I am concerned about the radiation from dental x-rays. Are they safe?
You will be happy to know that at Shank Dentistry, we use fully digital dental x-rays. Digital dental x-rays require up to 90% less radiation than traditional x-rays, making them ultra-low in radiation. You can actually receive higher levels of radiation exposure from the atmosphere just by being outside.
While we understand that patients wish to avoid unnecessary radiation, periodic dental x-rays are necessary to diagnose and treat dental conditions such as decay, infection, bone loss, and trauma. Without dental x-rays we would not be able to see what is going on beneath the surface of your enamel.
At Shank Dentistry, we have a conservative approach to dental care, so you will not find us taking any unnecessary x-rays. We take what we need for effective diagnosis and base the frequency of x-rays on your previous oral health history. For most patients, just a few small yearly x-rays are enough to detect and treat conditions.
Depending on your health history – or if you are having a dental emergency – we may need to take additional images of your teeth.
We want you to feel completely comfortable with the care you receive here at our Indianapolis, IN dental office. If you ever have questions about the necessity of dental x-rays or treatment, just ask! We are always happy to answer your questions or address your concerns.
