Porcelain/Ceramic Crowns, Bridges, and Veneers
Sometimes when a tooth is missing a significant amount of tooth structure due to decay, fracture, or extreme wear and attrition, a crown may be necessary to reliably rebuild the tooth to its full contour. Ceramic crowns (and veneers) can also be used to address a variety of cosmetic concerns. While crowns used to be made from either gold alloys or a metal coping with opaque ceramic overlaying it, we now have the ability to create beautiful crowns, bridges, and veneers with high-strength ceramics. These ceramic crowns don’t discolor around the gum line over time because they lack the dark metal coping used in porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns yet are much stronger because they are made from a single high-strength material.
Why We Are Different
At Shank Dentistry, we have brought this type of service to a whole new level with our in-house digital lab. In an effort to deliver an unparalleled level of care to our patients, Dr. Shank started his own dental lab. While a number of offices have purchased small chairside 4-axis milling units to make specific crowns in-house, these machines are very limited in the scope of materials available to the doctor and produce a restoration that is less accurate in its fit. In comparison, our office is using actual commercial lab equipment of the highest quality with a 5-axis mill and 3D printing technology. These tools give us a much wider material selection to be able to provide our patients with the restoration that best fits their specific needs with the same degree of accuracy and precision as would be obtained by commercial labs in a fraction of the time it would take to when being completed by an outside lab. Each restoration is digitally designed, milled, fired, and polished in-house by Dr. Shank.
