At Shank Dentistry, our priority is to help you keep your smile beautiful and healthy for your entire life! We emphasize preventive dentistry and patient education to give you the best chance at preserving your smile. However, we understand that sometimes a tooth is compromised even despite your best efforts at dental care. Teeth need to be restored for many different reasons, such as trauma to the face or a car accident. Whatever the reason for your dental injury, our compassionate dental team can help you repair your smile.

Why Dental Restorations Are Important

If you have one or more damaged teeth, it is crucial to repair the teeth as soon as possible.

Sometimes, our Indianapolis, IN dental patients tell us that they do not understand why restorative dental work is so important. Many people believe if the damaged tooth is in the back of the mouth, or doesn't hurt, there is no need to have it looked at by a dentist.

The truth is, however, that it is almost always the best idea to fix a broken tooth — even if that tooth is not causing any problems. Similarly, it is usually best to replace teeth that have fallen out, been extracted, or are missing entirely.

Dental restorations such as dental crowns, bridges, and fillings are so important because your teeth are designed to work together to achieve optimal chewing and speaking. Each tooth plays a vital role in your mouth not only cosmetically, but functionally as well. The teeth on your upper and lower jaws do their job together as a complete whole — and they cannot perform as well when one or more of them is damaged.

Restorative dentistry is the process of rehabilitating and repairing the teeth so that they can once again function at their prime level. When you have a damaged tooth, and you receive a restorative dental treatment, the goal is to help the injured tooth area heal more effectively. Sometimes, a tooth needs significant restoration; other times, only a more minor restorative treatment is required. The objective, however, is to give your teeth the best chance of recovering and restoring them to full function.

Different Types of Dental Restorations

As discussed above, there are different levels and types of dental restorations. The level of treatment you need will depend on your circumstances and the amount of trauma or damage to your smile. No matter which type of restorative dentistry you need, however, our gentle and caring staff at Shank Dental can assist you.

If you have never had a restorative dental procedure done, you may be unfamiliar with the different types of dental restorations available. Our Indianapolis, IN dentist Dr. Kyle Shank can evaluate your smile and help you determine which restorative option may be best for your situation.

Below, we discuss several of the different types of restorative dentistry in more detail:

Porcelain Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a porcelain structure that sits on top of a damaged tooth structure to protect the portion of the tooth underneath. Just as people wear crowns on their heads, dental crowns rest on top of the tooth. Why are crowns necessary? If a tooth is missing a significant amount of structure due to decay, fracture, or extreme wear and attrition, a dental crown can rebuild its form and restore function. Dental crowns can also help hide cosmetic flaws if you have a “problem” tooth or two.

Most dental crowns are made from a type of ceramic known as porcelain. Porcelain dental crowns are designed to mimic the structure and appearance of natural teeth, which means they are virtually unnoticeable within the mouth! One of the most amazing things about modern dental crowns is that we can easily customize them to blend in with the rest of your natural teeth. If you need a porcelain crown in Indianapolis, IN, Shank Dental is available to help! You can reach our dental office on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at (317) 350-1534.

Dental Bridges

Porcelain dental crowns are an excellent restorative option for individual teeth. But if you have a section or group of missing or damaged teeth, a dental bridge may be a better option.

Dental bridges cover larger areas or gaps within the mouth. These dental appliances connect two sections of teeth and "bridge" the gap between them. Dental bridges are a popular restorative option, but they require the support of healthy teeth on either side. Dr. Shank can also affix a dental bridge to artificial crowns or implants if the surrounding teeth are not healthy or strong enough to support the appliance.

There are several different types of dental bridges available at our Indianapolis, IN dental office. If you would like to know which type of dental bridge is right for you, consult with Dr. Kyle Shank. Depending on what he observes during your dental appointment, he may recommend a dental bridge or even a different type of dental restoration.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are one of the most innovative dental restorations available. If you are missing teeth and are searching for a way to restore function and appearance to your smile, you will find no better solution than dental implants.

At Shank Dentistry, we recommend dental implants to our Indianapolis dental patients who want the very best in restorative dentistry. What exactly are dental implants? Dental implants are an artificial tooth replacement made up of a titanium post, abutment, and a porcelain crown.

The titanium post is inserted into the jawbone where a natural tooth used to sit. The post takes the place of natural tooth roots and provides structure to the jaw deep below the gum line. After the jawbone heals around the implant post, an abutment is used to connect it to a porcelain crown that is the visible part of your dental implant. The result is a healthy, beautiful “tooth” that looks and acts like the real thing!

Dental implants are arguably the most involved dental restoration. Implants require treatment over several dental appointments, and the procedures take place a few months apart. Dental implants are very high-quality, and this quality takes time. Once the implant has fully healed in your jaw, however, you will find that you can chew, eat, and speak naturally once again.

Dr. Kyle Shank is highly experienced when it comes to placing dental implants for our Indianapolis, IN dental patients. He is available to meet with you when you are ready to discuss dental implants.
