Having to travel across town to receive treatment from a specialist can disrupt your schedule and cause some anxiety. Most patients prefer to receive as much dental care as possible in the comfort and familiarity of their usual dental office.
Fortunately, Dr. Shank has significant experience with extractions and oral surgery. While some surgeries do require a specialist, the vast majority of oral surgery can be completed comfortably here in our Perry Township dental office.
Dr. Shank prides himself on providing quality care in a comfortable environment, and that extends to how we approach oral surgery.
At Shank Dentistry, we do our best to save your natural teeth, whenever possible. If a tooth sustains significant damage due to trauma, decay, or infection, however, removing it may be the best way to protect both your overall health as well as the health of the surrounding teeth. Additionally, teeth may erupt at the wrong angle or position, causing pain or even changes in your tooth alignment or bite.
We believe that all dentistry can be comfortable dentistry. Dental surgery does not need to be a painful procedure. Dr. Shank expertly anesthetizes (numbs) your surgical site so that you don’t feel any pain. His experience in oral surgery means that your treatment will be a smooth process from start to finish. He will provide specific instructions regarding after care as well so that the healing process is as uneventful as possible. A follow-up appointment will allow Dr. Shank to monitor your healing and discuss tooth replacement options, if necessary.
Wisdom Teeth Surgeries
Not all wisdom teeth require removal. For some patients, however, they can be problematic. Located at the very back of your mouth, wisdom teeth (third molars) may not have enough room to erupt properly and may create pain as they try to do so, pressing against your other teeth. Because of their location, wisdom teeth are also challenging to keep clean, making them more susceptible to decay and making the gum tissue around them susceptible to infection.
An evaluation will determine if your wisdom teeth require removal. We can discuss the pros and cons of surgery, and Dr. Shank will be happy to share his advice so that you feel confident in your decision.
Sedation Dentistry for Your Comfort
We understand that many patients have anxiety surrounding dental care and that having surgery might amplify those feelings for some people. Dr. Shank offers oral sedation to allow patients anxiety-free dentistry.
Using prescription medications, oral sedation allows patients to fully relax for treatment, get and stay numb more effectively, and reduce feelings of a gag reflex. Most patients don’t even remember their appointment when sedated. Dr. Shank has received extensive training in oral sedation administration and provides many patients each year with a way to have dental treatment without the stress. You can read more about it on our Sedation Dentistry Page.
