I have heard gum disease treatment is very unpleasant. How bad is it?

Gum Disease Treatment FAQ | Shank Center for Dentistry One scary story can ruin the experience for everyone! At Shank Dentistry, we believe that all dental treatment can be pain-free. While the dental chair may not be your favorite place to be, it doesn’t have to be a painful experience.

How comfortable your treatment is depends a lot on the people who provide it. Dr. Shank and our dedicated hygienists are compassionate and gentle. We never rush patients in or out the door. Instead, we take our time and do things right. That goes for periodontal cleanings, as well.

If you suffer from gum disease, removing the tartar and bacteria from above and below your gum line is essential to healing and your health. After all, gum disease is really just a chronic infection. Our hygienist uses precision instruments and expert skills to do this with minimal discomfort. We use a variety of techniques to keep our patients comfortable during the appointment ranging from topical anesthetic to an anesthetic gel placed between the tooth and gums, to regular anesthetic to completely numb the area. After the appointment, some minor tenderness is to be expected, but this is not significant and will only last for a couple of days. Some patients also experience some minor sensitivity to cold, but this is also very temporary. Dr. Shank and his team will be happy to give recommendations.

If you are overly anxious about your treatment, we also offer sedation dentistry.  Sedation dentistry helps patients relax for treatment. Many times, patients are so relaxed they don’t even remember their appointment! If you need periodontal treatment and want it all done in one day, sedation dentistry can make your appointment seem like a breeze.
